Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such medications must be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
